This series is inspired by one of the oldest Indonesian Batik motifs named ‘Kawung”. It is basically a four lobed stylised flower pattern which is said to represent the cross section of the palm fruit (Kawung). The four lobes or circles can be arranged in a variety of ways to create different dynamically repeated patterns.
Traditionally worn by royal family in Java, Kawung is a very prestigious motif and carries many symbolic meanings. Its association to the palm blossom indicates purity and honesty, while the palm fruit reflects fertility and hope. Due to its royal history, Kawung is linked with power, wisdom and justice. There is also a profound philosophy attached to it of universal energy and the sacred origin of human life, longevity and eternal life.
